Roots of Our Onions
Our classroom onions have sprouted roots! Some of them even have started growing from the top. They will need to be transferred to our garden soon. One room 109 student wondered why the roots were stuck in the cotton balls. This led to us role playing plants with roots firmly secured in the soil and plants without roots secured during a windy storm.
Pattern Blocks
On Thursday, we used to pattern blocks to explore how different shapes can be used to make up objects. The students got very creative with this assignment!

Suson Park
On Wednesday we visited Suson Park.
We rode the bus.
We ate lunch at picnic tables.
We played on the playground.
We got to know the animals. We learned about how their needs are met and how they help people meet their needs. This tied into our social studies unit of animal helpers.

Potatoes
Today room 109 added potatoes to our garden. First we examine the potato eyes and nodes. We talked about how potatoes are actually tubers.
Science Over the Weekend
James brought in an animal skull and leg bone that he found while camping over the weekend. Room 109 examined these items and determined that the animal probably had eyes on the side of its head instead of at the front like us. We tried to take our best guess of what we thought the animal might have been based on the features of the bones.

Dissecting Seeds
Yesterday we dissected soaked lima beans. We discovered four parts of a seed. We found the baby plant or embryo which is made up of a small leaf and root. We found the stored food part of the lima bean which helps give the plant energy to make it through the soil and we found the seed coat.
