Habitats
Last week was the introduction to our animal helper unit. We tried to determine the habitats of animal helpers by reading informational books.
Measuring Mass
Last week, we used gram pieces to measure cubes. We determined that one gram was equal to one cube. We also noticed that five single gram pieces was equal to a single five gram piece. Two students noticed that a lion loot was equal to one gram.

Two-question Story Problems
Today room 109 worked on solving two-question story problems. They had to take the answer from the first question to help solve the second.

Homework Folders
Quarter one reading/power word bingo homework folders were cashed out yesterday. Room 109 students earned lots of lion loot in exchange for their homework bingo. Quarter two homework will come home next week.

Using Bubbles for Wind Speed and Direction
On Tuesday, room 109 blew bubbles on the blacktop to help us determine wind speed and wind direction. We discovered there was a light breeze that morning and it seemed to be blowing to the north. We then observed the school flag to see how quickly it was moving in the breeze.
Spicy Words in the Flower Garden
Last Friday, room 109 used the flower garden to help us find spicy words. We observed the colors, textures and shapes of each plant to help us generate descriptive or spicy words. We made a list of words for the classroom so we can include them in our writing to make it more interesting.

Telling More with Partners
Room 109 has been working hard on a personal narrative about a choice they made at school. On Thursday, we worked in partners to help us tell more in our stories.
Doubles Plus One
On Tuesday room 109 learned about doubles plus one. We learned that this strategy can help us solve addition facts quickly.
Anemometers/Pinwheels
On Tuesday we studied pinwheels and anemometers. We discussed how windspeed can be measured. Then we made our own pinwheels.
