Gardening With Our Peer Pals
On Monday, room 109 worked in the garden with Mr. Christensen's fourth graders. We planted snap peas, radishes, and arugula. We talked about the parts of the plant and how we eat different parts depending on the vegetable. We also talked about how plants can grow during different seasons. The vegetables we planted today do best in the fall.
Spicy Words
On Monday, room 109 learned about "spicy words". Spicy words are usually adjectives. Authors use them to make their writing more interesting. First, room 109 tried to find ways to spice up the word "good". We found words such as fantastic and wonderful better described what we were trying to say. Then, Ms. Moya read aloud a book with good examples of spicy words. Finally, room 109 read books with their partners. Their goal was to try to find spicy words in their reading. Eventually, the students will be adding spicy words to their own writing.
Doubles Game
On Monday we played a math game to help us better understand addition facts that have the same addend. These facts are called doubles. An example of a double is 4 + 4 = 8.

Rain Gauge
On Tuesday we placed a rain gauge in the first grade garden bed. The first graders are patiently waiting for a rainy day so we can measure the rain fall. While we were outside, we sample basil and mint leaves. Room 109 was very brave to try something new. Some students were familiar with the plants. One student went into detail about how his mom uses basil in her cooking. He said she is a good cook. :)

Choices
While Ms. Moore Is working with small groups or individual students it is important that the other students are working on meaningful and interesting work. During this time, students may chose reading to their self or someone, working on writing and doing word work (phonics or sight word work).

School Store
On Friday, room 109 shopped in the school store. The students traded their earned lion loot for prizes. Some students decided to save their loot for big ticket items. We will visit the store next month. Your child can earn lion loot by making safe, respectful, positive and learner choices.
Room 109 students are waiting patiently for their turn to shop in the school store.

Room 109 has started to learn games for math workshop. We started with the game of top-it. This game is played in pairs. Each partner draws a card. The partner with the bigger number wins both cards. The partner with the most cards wins. The game top-it will be used as a foundation of more complex games in the future.
